Two very different groups of students from neighbouring countries peer into the cultural chasm that divides them.
Pada tahun 1997, La Trobe Student Theatre and Film memprakarsai sebuah produksi bersama dengan IKIP Bandung (UPI) dalam drama Indonesia, “Sumur Tanpa Dasar” karya Arifin C. Noer. Proyek ini melibatkan mahasiswa La Trobe dan mahasiswa Indonesia untuk berlatih dan memproduksi pertunjukan untuk ditampilkan di kedua negara (Indonesia dan Australia).
Dalam rangka merayakan kesuksesan di masa silam, atas hubungan kerjasama yang telah terjalin selama lebih dari 20 tahun, La Trobe Student Theatre and Film kembali menginisiasi kerja kolaborasi lintas dua negara. Pertunjukan kali ini melibatkan Mainteater Bandung dan Teater Lakon, mengangkat tajuk“The Light Within A Night – Cahaya Memintas Malam”, di bawah arahan sutradara Sahlan Mujtaba (Bandung, Indonesia) dan Bob Pavlich (La Trobe University).
Mengangkat cerita rakyat Sunda, yakni kisah Jamarun, seorang petani miskin yang dituduh sebagai pembunuh. Ia kemudian digiring ke pengadilan. Tanpa bukti dan pembelaan, Jamarun tidak bisa lolos dari penghakiman. Ia pun dihukum gantung di tengah alun-alun. Sesaat setelah digantung, ribuan burung dan kupu-kupu mengepung langit -sehingga suasana berubah gelap-, menyerbu aroma dari tubuh bangkai yang harumnya menyeruak di udara.
Kolaborasi dua kelompok mahasiswa ini tidak sekadar menceritakan kisah tersebut tetapi juga akan membangun cerita-cerita lain dari isu-isu yang muncul di sekitarnya.
Antara Australia dan Indonesia, beserta kisahnya dan perilakunya, dalam banyak aspek masih asing satu sama lain. Pertunjukan ini menatap dengan tajam ke dalam jurang budaya yang memisahkan mereka dan dalam waktu bersamaan juga mencari hal-hal yang menghubungkan mereka. Bentuk teater ini akan disajikan dengan beragam bentuk cara ungkap; melalui multi-seni (teater, tari, dan multimedia) dan multi-bahasa (keragaman bahasa dari Indonesia dan Australian).

Two very different groups of students from neighbouring countries peer into the cultural chasm that divides them.
In 1997 La Trobe Student Theatre initiated a co-production with the Indonesian tertiary institution, IKIP Bandung (now UPI), of an Indonesian play, The Bottomless Well by Arifin C. Noer. This project involved La Trobe students working with Indonesian students to rehearse and produce the play for performance seasons in both countries.
In celebration of the success and connection made all those years ago, La Trobe Student Theatre and Film, alongside Mainteater and Teater Lakon, present a collaborative production reflecting the success of the original project. Introducing The Light Within A Night – Cahaya Memintas Malam, a production devised by students from La Trobe Student Theatre, Australia, and students from Teater Lakon, Indonesia, under the guidance of directors Sahlan Mujtaba ( Mainteater Bandung, Indonesia) and Bob Pavlich (La Trobe University, Australia).
In the ancient Sundanese tale of Jamarun a poor man is executed. Before he dies he tells the town that his innocent corpse will take on a beautiful fragrance. His words turn into a curse when the birds and butterflies that are drawn to the sweet smell blot out the sun and turn day into a perpetual night.
Two very different groups of students encounter this story and the issues that raises.
Australia and Indonesia and their stories and behaviours are in many aspects still foreign to one another. This play peers into the very real cultural chasm which separates them from each other while at the same time searching for the things which connect them. The play will be presented through multiple form of art (theater, dance, and multimedia) and also multiple language (diversity language of Indonesia and Australia).
